How To Polish Concrete?

Pacific Modular uses the following process to polish concrete:

  1. We start by “diamond grinding” the existing floor. The process of diamond grinding involves using several diamond-abrasive grits 3-8 times, depending on the quality of the existing floor. This kind of sanding not only smooths the floor but also provides a rough surface that the polish can bond to.
  2. Next, we apply a densifier to the newly-prepared floor. A densifier is a liquid chemical that fills in porous holes the concrete develops when first laid. Applying the densifier guarantees a smooth surface for the polish.

After we allow the densifier to cure, we sand again with a fine grit to help the polish stick. Finally, we apply the desired polish and allow it to cure.

Types of Concrete Floor Polishing

We offer the following types of polished concrete floors:

Cream Concrete Polishing

Cream-finished (Class A) concrete polishing involves the least amount of diamond grinding, so contractors can only perform it on a new floor. It exposes the sand particles within the laid concrete while creating a smooth surface. Therefore, the unique characteristics and imperfections of your floor are on display.

Pros

  • An organic and trendy appearance
  • Easy to stain
  • Fast installation process
  • Can opt for a high-gloss finish

Cons

  • Gray without stain
  • Can only apply to new floors
  • May not work stylistically for certain spaces

Salt and Pepper Concrete Polishing

Salt and pepper concrete floor polish (Class B) involves more abrasive diamond grinding. The grits we use not only expose sand particles but also uncover fine stones. This method of polishing gives the floor a vintage appearance.

Pros

  • Reflects both natural and artificial light attractively
  • Can renovate floors with this polished concrete finish
  • More durable than cream finish
  • Can apply a high-gloss finish

Cons

  • Takes longer to complete than cream-finished concrete floors
  • May not match certain businessesā€™ interior design

Aggregate-Exposed Concrete Polishing

You can opt for either Class C or D aggregate-exposed concrete polishing. A Class D polish exposes the largest aggregate pieces, while Class C only exposes some of the large aggregates. This process produces a floor that appears similar to terrazzo.

Many commercial organizations opt for Class D Portland polished concrete floors. These floors look sophisticated and visually interesting.

Pros

  • Class C and D are the most durable polished cement floors.
  • Exposed aggregate is most suitable for office spaces, hotels, and other businesses where appearance is key.
  • A high-gloss finish looks incredible on this exposed-aggregate finish.

Cons

  • This type is the most labor-intensive concrete floor polish.
  • Takes longer to finish.
  • The most expensive type.

Benefits of Concrete Floor Polishing

The benefits of concrete polishing include:

  • Easy to clean with pH-neutral solutions
  • Anti-static
  • Can withstand high temperatures and heavy impact
  • Nearly impossible to penetrate with chemicals
  • Slip-resistant
  • Unique designs and can match multiple types of decor

FAQs – Commercial Concrete Floor Polishing

How to Clean Polished Concrete Floors?

When cleaning polished concrete floors, it is best to either vacuum or dust mop the floor. Doing so prevents damage and scratching to the top layer of polish.

For a deeper clean, make sure that you use a non-abrasive mop or pad with a neutral floor cleaner. You should never mop with water only. Stubborn dirt and stains could remain and permanently discolor your floor.

How to Remove Stains from Polished Concrete Floors?

If you remove a spill quickly, your polished concrete floor should not stain. However, leaving liquid (such as vinegar, wine, or detergent) for too long can cause staining.

To avoid staining, remove the liquid with a rag as soon as possible. Then use a pH-neutral cleaning solution to treat the area.

If your floor becomes stained, you can attempt to remove the stain yourself with diamond polishing pads or special concrete polish cleaners. However, if you don’t have experience with these products, you could potentially damage your floor further. If you aren’t confident in your abilities, call a professional to get the stain out.

How to Make Polished Concrete Floors Shine?

Sometimes, regaining shine on polished cement floors is as easy as cleaning them. As previously mentioned, use a pH-neutral solution to clean after removing all dust and debris.

If cleaning your floor does not work, you will likely need to call a professional to refinish the floor. With regular wear and tear, polished concrete floors can lose their shine.
